Preparing for Online Therapy When You Share Your Home

Online therapy may seem convenient until you think about who is home, how thin the walls are, or whether someone could walk into the room. Feeling able to speak openly is an important part of planning a virtual appointment.

If your provider offers online sessions, talk with them about privacy before the visit. HHS recommends a private location, attention to who can hear or see the conversation, and steps to protect your device and connection.

Think through the room before the appointment

Choose a time and place where you can reasonably expect fewer interruptions. If it is safe and practical, let other people in the home know that you need uninterrupted time.

Headphones can keep the provider's voice from being heard by others. Your own voice may still carry through a door or wall, so consider that separately. You might test the sound with a trusted person using ordinary conversation before the appointment.

If the room will not let you speak freely, tell your provider. Ask about a different appointment time, another suitable location, or an in-person option if available.

Give interruptions a plan

Consider what you will do if someone enters or you discover that you can be overheard. You could tell the therapist directly that your privacy has changed and ask to pause.

Discuss this possibility at the beginning rather than trying to manage it silently during a sensitive conversation. If someone in your home monitors your communications or makes it unsafe to speak, tell the provider through a safe means before the visit so you can discuss an appropriate arrangement.

A good plan needs to match your actual circumstances.

Prepare the technology you will use

Follow the provider's instructions for joining the visit. Test the connection, camera, and sound ahead of time, and have the device charged.

HHS also recommends considering nearby devices that can record or respond to speech, using a personal device where possible, and keeping software updated. Follow the provider's guidance for sending private information securely.

Avoid having the appointment while driving or running errands. Choose a setting where you can stay present and safely remain for the visit.

Confirm the location and backup details

Ask what happens if the connection drops and how you should reconnect. Make sure the provider has the information they need about where you are during the appointment.

HHS telehealth guidance includes planning for the patient's location, emergency contacts, and disconnection during an emergency. Your provider can explain the arrangements for your care.

If you will be away from your usual location, check with the provider in advance that the appointment can proceed from there.

Make room before and after the session

Write down the concerns you want to raise so that technical details do not take all your attention. If possible, leave a few minutes afterward before returning to a demanding task or family discussion.
