When Overthinking Becomes More Than Just Being Careful

Thinking things through is useful. Replaying the same decision for three hours is usually not. Overthinking often feels responsible because the mind is trying to prevent mistakes, embarrassment, conflict, or regret.

The problem is that more thinking does not always create more clarity. Sometimes it creates more possibilities to worry about.

Problem-solving has an endpoint

Healthy problem-solving gathers information, weighs options, makes a decision, and moves forward. Rumination circles the same question without producing a useful next step.

You may reread messages, rehearse conversations, imagine every possible outcome, or keep searching for certainty that does not exist.

Therapy can help you tolerate uncertainty

Counseling may focus on perfectionism, fear of making mistakes, anxiety, reassurance seeking, avoidance, or beliefs about what it means to make the wrong choice.

The goal is not to stop thinking. It is to know when thinking is helping and when it has turned into a loop that keeps you anxious and stuck.

If worry, avoidance, or tension is interfering with everyday life, adult individual counseling offers a place to discuss those patterns and your goals. View availability on Headway for virtual appointments, insurance information, and cost estimates, or read what to expect when starting therapy.
