How Work Stress Turns Into Burnout

A hard week at work is not the same as burnout. Burnout usually develops when high demands continue without enough recovery, control, support, or meaning.

You may still be getting the job done while becoming more irritable, cynical, detached, forgetful, exhausted, or less patient with people around you.

Rest helps, but sometimes the system is the problem

A weekend off may help when the issue is temporary overload. It may not help much when the same expectations, staffing problems, boundaries, role conflict, or pressure are waiting on Monday.

That is why burnout cannot always be solved with better self-care. Sometimes the work involves deciding what needs to change in the environment.

Therapy can help separate what you control from what you do not

Counseling may focus on boundaries, perfectionism, guilt, decision-making, workload, communication, career questions, identity, and how chronic stress is affecting the rest of your life.

The goal is not to teach you how to tolerate unlimited pressure. It is to build a more sustainable way of functioning.

If ongoing stress is making work, rest, or relationships harder to manage, you can discuss practical goals in adult individual counseling. View availability on Headway for virtual appointments, insurance information, and cost estimates, or read what to expect when starting therapy.
